Concert commemorates WWI end

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department hosts its "Sing and String" concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Thorpe Langley Auditorium in Old Maine, 1710 Weeks Ave.

The performance features the UW-Superior Orchestra, A Capella Choir and Chamber Choir, with much of the concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

"The A Cappella Choir will be performing two settings of Wilfred Owen's poems by choral composer Stephen Tyler," said Michael Fuchs, assistant professor of choral activities at UWS. "Wilfred Owen was a British soldier and poet who died in World War I only a few days before the armistice."

The Chamber Choir performs Palestrina motet "Super Flumina Babylonis," as well as a French song by Maurice Ravel, "Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis." Ravel was a soldier and truck driver for the French army in World War I and wrote this piece in 1914.

The UWS choirs and orchestra end the evening with a combined performance of J.S. Bach's "Dona Nobis Pacem" from the Mass in B Minor.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for students. For information, call 715-394-8115 or email
