Skate A Million Miles runs through May 7.

The event will focus on the health benefits of rollerskating and has partnered with the President's Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program.

World of Wheels Skate Center, 1218 Oakes Ave., joins skating centers across the country in asking skaters to register for this event. To reach the one million mile goal, 10,000 skaters are needed to skate at least five times throughout the event.

Roller skating is also a unique way to achieve health benefits while having fun. The average person can burn 350 calories by skating at a rate of six miles per hour. This number increases to 600 calories if the person averages 10 miles within the hour. This is equivalent of calories burned in jogging. Roller skating is also recommended by the American Heart Association as an aerobic fitness sport.
