The Christmas Lighting Challenge is on.
More than 75 dazzling displays throughout the Northland, including 21 residences and seven businesses in Superior, are competing to snag the most votes in the annual contest. Online voting takes place through Dec. 20.
One Superior display, the Christmas Corner at 2101 E. Third St., is a featured Grand Master display this year. Visitors can walk through the whimsical wonderland and even drop off letters to Santa through Dec. 17, according to the Christmas Corner Facebook page . A return address should be included if the child would like to receive a letter from Santa in return.
Contestants do more than light the neighborhood; they also help local nonprofits. This year, the Superior-Douglas County Area Chamber of Commerce ambassadors will donate $5 per entry to the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse. At least $150 will be donated this year, according to marketing director Nikky Farmakes.
Winners in Duluth, Superior, Cloquet and Hermantown will receive a gift basket with hundreds of dollars in prizes and gift cards from local retailers and an award to commemorate their win. The winners will be announced Dec. 22 at a special ceremony at Bentleyville.
