Ink Water Press of Portland, Oregon, announced the release of "Checkmate," a new action/thriller by Jean Hackensmith of Gordon, formerly of Superior.
Hackensmith has been writing since age 20. She has ten books under her belt, including the popular "Passage" Time Travel Romance Saga, which she co-authored with Kathe Birch. Her newest release, "Checkmate" is being considered for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award.
When asked why she chose to switch genres for "Checkmate," Hackensmith said, "I was an avid reader of romance novels years ago, so when I started writing myself, it was only natural that that's the genre I chose. Inevitably, though, all of my books had an action or suspense undertone. "Checkmate," too, started out as strictly a romance, but as the book developed I realized that the stalking incidents were the heart of the story. My books always kind 'write themselves' when I really get into them, and this one was no different. Before I knew it, the tide had turned and I was writing a thriller."
"Checkmate", Book One in The Brian Koski Stalker Series, tells the story of Caryn Deaver, whose abusive ex-husband bound her and their children hand and foot, locked them in the bathroom, and set the house on fire. They managed to escape with their lives, and Dan Hamilton was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the crime. He's out now and the rules in his sadistic game allow Caryn only 12 "moves" before she will die. Zach Riker was the first paramedic on the scene 18 years ago. He saved Caryn's life. Now she is his life and he'll stop at nothing to protect the woman he loves from a madman.
"Poppy" from LongandShortReviews.com read the book with these comments: "Wow. Okay ... so just ... wow! This was one of the BEST suspense novels I've read in I don't know how long ... If I were a Hollywood executive, I'd option this book for a movie immediately. It's really that good."
