A roofing project for the Tri Lakes Community Center has earned a $1,000 boost. The center was named the winner of East Central Energy’s 2019 Touchstone Energy Community Award. The annual award, which comes with a $1,000 cash prize, is given to a nonprofit or civic organization that enhances life in the community.
The award has been offered by East Central Energy and other Minnesota electric cooperatives since 2005, spokesperson Lynzie Kelly said. The only other Wisconsin organization to win the award was the Oulu Community Theater in Bayfield County in 2012. A total of five organizations applied for the 2019 honor.
The Tri Lakes Community Center board plans to use the prize money to help replace the roof, which is over 30 years old and prone to ice dams.
The all-volunteer organization enjoys providing a welcoming gathering place for the local community. A wide range of events take place at the center each month — weekly fitness classes, snowmobile club meetings, fundraising benefits and more. The board has also worked with the Superior Challenge Center and the Salvation Army.
“Friendship and cooperation are at the heart of the community center,” said Tri Lakes Community Center member Connie Noble. “Our volunteers promote activities that are inclusive to everyone. This is where friends, neighbors and families work together to improve our area.”
