Senior Connections is looking for 50 community members to deliver a meal to a senior next month. The 2018 March for Meals raises awareness of the Meals for Wheels program and Douglas County residents who depend on it.
In 2017, the program delivered more than 37,000 Meals on Wheels to Douglas County residents and served more than 11,000 meals at its dining sites.
A 1972 amendment to the Older Americans Act of 1965 established a national nutrition program for seniors. Programs like the one in Douglas County has been delivering nutritious meals to seniors at risk of hunger and isolation in virtually every community across the country for nearly 45 years.
Home-delivered meal employees may find themselves climbing over snow banks, delivering in wind, snow and cold. Community volunteers should bring along a decent winter jacket, good boots, gloves or mittens and a smiling face. Past volunteers have had their eyes opened to how our seniors are living in the community.
Community volunteers can sign up for one of five daily routes Monday through Friday from 9:45 a.m. to about noon. Call Nutrition Director Dale Johnson at (715) 394-3611 or email nutritiondirector@seniorconnectionswi.org to reserve a slot.
