Brekken Evanson of South Range, a junior at Northwestern High School, has been selected to represent her peers as a member of the Youth Board of Directors for the FACT Movement, Wisconsin’s statewide youth tobacco prevention program. Evanson brings positive leadership skills and a commitment to speak out against the dangers of tobacco to the position. Evanson‘s commitment to this work and passion for the cause led to her selection.
FACT was founded in 2001 and is a youth-driven movement where young people in grades seven through 12 work together to spread the truth about tobacco through school and community based activities. Evanson is one of 17 youth who will serve a one-year term providing overall leadership, guidance and feedback to FACT.
“I am excited to be elected to the FACT Board, to help lead my peers to continue to keep spreading the truth about tobacco,” said Evanson. “If more teens could see the truth about tobacco’s deadly effects more lives can be saved.”
Nearly 11 percent of Wisconsin high school students are smokers.
“Over 5,000 teens become new daily smokers every year in Wisconsin,” Evanson said. “I hope my work with the FACT Board will continue to spread the word about tobacco and continue to save lives.”
FACT is a funded program of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Tobacco Prevention and Control Program and is managed by the American Lung Association in Wisconsin. It was developed out of a statewide concern about teen tobacco use and has educated hundreds of thousands of youth over the last 13 years.
