Lake Superior Day celebration returns to Barker's Island

Visitors can enjoy live music, free activities, stand-up paddle boarding July 18.

A free, family-friendly event celebrating Lake Superior Day will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. July 18 on Barker’s Island in Superior. The event features live music, kids activities, stand-up paddle boarding, informational booths, food vendors and more.

Organizations from throughout the region will help visitors dive into Lake Superior learning. Activities will include:

  • A Lake Superior-themed obstacle course.

  • A scavenger hunt for all ages.

  • The SS Meteor will offer half-price admission for tours of the last above-water whaleback ship in the world. The Lake Superior Estuarium, a free natural history museum on Barker’s Island, will be open.

  • Free stand-up paddle board demonstrations will be available from noon to 3 p.m. An online waiver must be submitted prior to paddling.

  • A free raffle will feature prizes from local businesses.

Music performances start at 11 a.m. with the 1970s sounds of Hodag and Hooch. Woodblind, an acoustic ska duo, will perform at 1 p.m.
Prior to the main event, North Shore Stand Up Paddleboarding will host its fourth annual Paddle for the People 4K recreational paddle race around Barker’s Island at 10 a.m. with a mandatory check-in from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Registration is free, but limited. Register at duluthsup.com .

Organizers are planning for a physically distanced event. Masks are recommended for people who are not vaccinated against COVID-19.
