A Korean War veteran who served as a pilot in the United States Air Force will be honored with a flag raising at 9 a.m. Friday, July 6, in front of the Richard I. Bong World War II Heritage Center. The flag raising is open to the public.
Harold I. Weinsheim was born April 4, 1925, in Mayville, Wisconsin. He served in the Air Force for more than 10 years as a pilot, navigator, bombardier, aerial gunner, sharpshooter and reservist. Weinsheim earned the rank of first lieutenant, while also receiving the American Theater Ribbon, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal during his years of service.
After his military service, he returned to Wisconsin and enrolled at the Marquette University School Of Business. He launched his successful 33-year career with The Miller Brewing Company in 1953, ascending within the ranks of international sales, culminating with the rank of U.S. sales director. He enjoyed the great cheeses of Wisconsin, a good game of cribbage, biting into a fresh green onion from the garden and rooting for all Wisconsin sports teams.
Weinsheim’s untimely death at age 59, due to a brain tumor, led his wife to become active as a member of the board of directors of The American Brain Tumor Association in 1986. Marcelline Weinsheim is currently a mentor to the caregivers of brain tumor patients.
His service to his country will not be forgotten by his wife, Marcelline of Milwaukee, and his children, Terry Urbaniak of Lake Nebagamon and Littleton, Colorado; John Weinsheim of Marina Del Rey, California; Glenn Weinsheim of Brookfield; and Kyle Weinsheim of Manhattan Beach, California.
