The Humane Society of Barron County is one step closer to its dream of winning a million dollar makeover. At the Humane Society of the United States Annual Animal Care Expo, ZooToo.com founder Richard Thompson announced the 10 shelters that are the only shelters left competing for the million dollar makeover. And the Humane Society of Barron County was one of those 10 shelters. This means that the donation to the shelter that they won for making the Top 20 on March 13 will be doubled to $10,000 and they now have a one in four chance of trading that $10,000 in for $25,000 or more.

The next and final stage of the contest takes place on the Web site ZooToo.com once again. From Monday, April 13 to Sunday, April 19, everyone in the United States will be able to vote for the shelter of their choice. The shelter with the third most votes will receive $25,000, the second most $50,000 and the top shelter will receive a $1 million makeover.

If the Humane Society of Barron County wins, they will work in conjunction with the ZooToo.com staff in planning and building a new animal shelter. All work would be contracted out to local businesses and builders, bring much needed revenue to many businesses in Barron County. Renovations planned include tripling the space for cats and dogs, making room to take in small animals and horses, and adding a large indoor space for educational seminars, training classes and animal exercise. A surgery room would be built and the long-time goal of spaying/neutering all animals before they leave the shelter would also be met, as well as bringing a low cost spay/neuter program to the community.

This contest is free for the shelter and for all of its supporters. To participate, log on and cast your vote for HSBC from April 13 through 19 in support of this great change to Barron County. You must be a registered member of ZooToo.com (the sign up process is very simple and takes about two minutes) and you also must have a profile picture in order to vote. If you need help signing up or posting a picture online, volunteers will be offering lessons and taking photos at the shelter on April 10 from noon to 4 p.m., April 11 from noon to 3 p.m. and April 13 from noon to 5 p.m. and at the Rice Lake Public Library on April 11 from 3-5 p.m..
