A Flag of Remembrance will fly for Lester G. Cain; he served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. Cain was born on March 9, 1914 in Kelvin, N.D. He joined the Army in the fall of 1941. He served in the 131st Engineer "C" Battalion during WWII. A very private individual, he kept his wartime experiences to himself, which family and friends always understood and respected. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Cain married and became the father of five children - James, William, Lucy, Donald and Ronald. His jobs included working for the local Great Northern Railroad. Cain’s patriotism and love of country was passed on to his sons who also served in the U.S. Army. His eldest son, James, became a career soldier. When James died, he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. with high military honors. Lester passed away May 21, 1968, in Seaside, Oregon. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Cable, Wis. The American flag will be raised for Cain at 9 a.m. Friday in front of the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center, 305 Harbor View Parkway. The event is free and open to the public.
