Superior: Applebee’s in Superior will donate 15% of every check to the Humane Society of Douglas County through Oct. 31. People can order online or call their orders in. Participants must bring a paper copy of the flyer from the humane society’s website, or show a digital picture to the cashier when you pick up your order.

Saturday, Oct. 9

Superior: Barker’s Island Farmers Market runs 9 a.m. to noon near the SS Meteor.

Superior: Douglas County Trader’s Village will be held at the Head of the Lakes Fairgrounds, 4700 Tower Ave., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event includes a farmers market, crafts, vendors and food.

Town of Superior: The North Country Trail Association's Brule-St. Croix Chapter will host a fall hike through the MacQuarrie Wetlands in western Douglas County. Hikers will meet at the trailhead on Hilpiper Road, southwest of Superior, at 9 a.m. The hike will be an out-and-back walk of up to 5 miles on a section of the North Country National Scenic Trail. Town of Superior: The Town of Superior Fire Department will host an open house and chili feed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fire station, located beside the town hall, 4917 U.S. Highway 35.

Town of Superior: Pups & Pastries, a craft fair and fundraiser for Fortitude Service Dogs, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. in the town hall.

Gordon: Explore the creation of an auto tour of the Northwest Sands area during a meeting at 1 p.m. in the Bird Sanctuary Club House, 12988 S. Bird Road. Superior: The University of Wisconsin-Superior holds a celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day at 4:30 p.m. at Maawanji’idiwin, The Place Where We Come Together, Medicine Wheel and Community Gathering Area in the courtyard near the Yellowjacket Union. Following a ceremony, the Woodland Sky Native American Dan Group performs at 5:30 p.m. in Old Main’s Thorpe Langley Auditorium.

Superior: Superior Public Library hosts Storytime in the Park at 10:30 a.m. in Pavilion 2 at Billings Park. The weekly event includes stories, crafts and fun for children.

Wednesday, Oct. 13

Superior: The Downtown Farmers Market runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot in the 1200 block of Banks Avenue.

Superior: The River Talks series returns at 5 p.m. with “Greener and Cleaner: How a Marina Takes Big Strides Toward Cleaner Water,” an in-person tour of environmental improvement on Barker’s Island. Theresa Qualls of the Wisconsin Clean Marina Program, Eric Thomas of Barker’s Island Marina and Michael Krick of the city of Superior are the speakers.

Virtual: Lake Superior Writers, a nonprofit organization, will host Superior Shares, a virtual open mic from 6-7 p.m. The event is free and open to members and nonmembers. Ten 5-minute reading slots are available. Participants will be notified ahead of time if they've been selected to read. Graphic content is prohibited. Brule: Old Brule Heritage Society holds its general meeting starting with a potluck at 6 p.m. at the Brule Town Hall. Following the meal, Jim Pellman presents “The Change in Shape of Brule from the Beginning, and its Shapers.” The meeting follows the presentation. Open to all with an interest in the area’s history.
