The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival has been canceled, according to a news release from its organizers. The event was scheduled for Aug. 27-28.
The decision came from the dragon boat festival's executive committee which "concluded that there is too short of a timeframe to successfully organize the event," according to the release.
"Each dragon boat team is made up of 20 people," Charlie Johnson, president of Superior Rotary Club 40, said in the release. “We typically begin recruiting in January to give teams enough time to fundraise for our charitable partner, 23rd Veteran. Since it’s only recently that all of us have started reconnecting and returning to normal activities, we didn’t feel there was enough time for team recruitment and fundraising to make this year’s festival a success.”
The Twin Ports Rotary clubs thanked past participants and sponsors. The organizers are planning on the festival making its return in 2022. In the past, the festival has raised over $1.3 million to support charitable organizations in the Twin Ports.
