The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival in Superior has been canceled this summer with the hopes of returning in 2021.

Harbortown Rotary President Max Holm told the News Tribune the event was canceled this year due to concerns with COVID-19 and being able to maintain proper social distancing. He said the executive committee, which includes representatives for Superior Rotary Club 40, Superior Sunrise Centennial Rotary Club and Harbortown Rotary, met virtually to decide to cancel the festival.

"It was a hard decision to make as this festival is a huge fundraiser for all the clubs associated and all the organizations that help throughout the weekend," Holm said. "This fundraiser helps the clubs make money to give back to their respective communities, for Harbortown we use a lot of this money to help our local schools and the youth in general."

The Dragon Boat Festival was scheduled for Aug. 21-22.

"Many other organizations benefit from this festival, so hopefully we can come back in 2021 and continue to do the amazing things that this festival provides above and beyond a really fun weekend at Barker's Island," Holm said.
