The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department Choirs and Orchestra perform with the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra as part of a tribute to American composer, Leonard Bernstein.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Goodman Auditorium at the Virginia High School in Virginia, Minn., and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Thorpe Langley Auditorium on the UWS campus.

"The students are very excited for this collaboration," said Dr. Erin Aldridge, Professor of Orchestra and Violin at UW-Superior. "The repertoire includes some of the great orchestral and choral works and it is always a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with other musicians."

This celebration for what would have been Bernstein's 100th birthday includes performances of Overture to "Candide," the "Candide Suite," arranged by Charlie Harmon, "Chichester Psalms," and "West Side Story Choral Suite," arranged by Mac Huff.

"As the world celebrates the centennial of Leonard Bernstein in 2018, the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra is excited to join in the celebrations and to collaborate with the University of Wisconsin Superior Orchestra and Choruses for this special concert," said Benjamin Nilles, artistic director and conductor of the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra. "As a conductor, composer, performer, educator, social activist and high-profile public figure, Bernstein was not only a towering American luminary, but one of the most important musical figures of the 20th century. His influence was far-reaching and cross-generational, and we continue to feel it today almost 30 years after his death. We are proud to commemorate the life and impact of Leonard Bernstein with a concert devoted to some of his most seminal works."

Prior to the performance in Virginia, Minn., the UWS Alumni Association hosts a dinner 5-7 p.m. at 218 Taphouse, 101 Third Ave. N. This pay-on-your-own dinner is open to alumni and friends of UWS.

"This is our first collaboration with the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra," said Dr. Katherine Chan, visiting director of choral activities and assistant professor of music at UWS. "It's a great opportunity as we get to perform in Virginia on Saturday and for our community in Superior on Sunday."

The Virginia High School is at 411 S. Fifth Ave., Virginia. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave., Superior.
