Cathedral School presented two awards May 18 at the annual Lumen Christi Award Dinner. Lumen Christi means "Light of Christ" and the award honors someone who lives the light of knowledge, character and truth that find its source in Christ.
Arlene Nordeen will be receiving the Lumen Christi Award. Nordeen was the kindergarten teacher at Cathedral School for 25 years. A lifelong resident of Superior, Nordeen took seriously the job of preparing children for first grade.
As an educator, she also taught service in a hands-on way to kindergarteners. The students learned that service to others could be fun and that it felt good to help others. Nordeen's signature service project was collecting teddy bears for orphans located in areas of the world where natural disasters struck. Her students know the power of a small plush bear, a prayer and a hug.
Monsignor Edward Meulemans was present to accept the Bishop Annabring Award for Lifetime Achievement. Meulemans dedicated a large portion of his career to advancing the mission of Cathedral School and making it a school of excellence.
During his 36 years in Superior, Meulemans served as an instructor of religion at Cathedral School, principal, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Superior, and Rector of Cathedral of Christ the King. Msgr. Meulemans is well-known throughout Superior for his work on various boards and committees and his tireless work on behalf of Cathedral School.

Father Andrew Ricci, Rector of Cathedral of Christ the King says, "Fr. Ed shaped my priesthood. During our year working together, he generously shared the practical wisdom and experience that defined his service here at Cathedral. I thank God daily for his presence in my life!" Cathedral School is excited to see Msgr. Meulemans return from his work in Mesa, Ariz., to accept the award.
