The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center and the Commemorative Air Force-Lake Superior Squadron open a new exhibit at the Bong Center at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, with a free beer and wine tasting.

CAF was in need of a new space for its operations and secured a new lease with the Richard I. Bong Airport in Superior for its restoration of a World War II PBY Catalina Amphibious Patrol Bomber.

The museum collection that was at the Duluth International Airport has been split between the airport and the Bong Center, 305 Harbor View Parkway.

The center is partnering with CAF for a 12-month temporary exhibit in the newly renovated rotating exhibit gallery. After the temporary exhibit, CAF will have a display case and wall space to display items from its collection for the public to see.

"It is a perfect partnership," Bong Center Director Hayes Scriven said. "It was the right timing. We are in the middle of planning our new exhibit schedule and the CAF was a perfect fit to fill the space."

The CAF collection has been on display at the Duluth International Airport for years, but had very limited access.

"With the collection on display now at the Bong, more people will be able to enjoy the many unique items in our collection," said Dewayne Tomasek, a volunteer with CAF. He said the collection includes many items like Frau G'ring's vest, Hermann G'ring's lap blanket, the most complete collection of World War II German Luftwaffe uniforms, and even a link trainer and many more items that you will only be able to see at the Bong Center.

The beer and wine tasting features Castle Danger and Earth Rider breweries, Canal Park Brewing and wine from Keyport Liquor.
