The Superior Telegram offers a service called City Briefs, a calendar for events that charge a fee. Contact City Briefs staff at, or call Stephanie or Joann at (715) 395-5000 about a special occasion ad. Submit free events to at least 10 days in advance.


Poplar: The village of Poplar hosts its seventh annual tree lighting event from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Bong Park along Main Street. Enjoy cookies, hot cocoa, apple cider, a bonfire, carols and Santa's arrival on a fire truck. Participants are encouraged to bring cookies to share; donations accepted to replace lights damaged in previous years.

Duluth: The Superior Singers, under the direction of Brian G. MacDonell, presents its 2017-18 Christmas concert "The Superior Singers Christmas Gospel Hour" featuring gospel music and a cappella spirituals at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Lutheran Church.


Superior: Seniors age 60 and older can get their holiday gifts wrapped for free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Superior Rehabilitation Center, 1800 New York Ave.

Superior: The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Douglas County) hosts a free family support group 5:30-7 p.m. in the Challenge Center meeting rooms. Contact Nancy at (715) 398-6471 or


Superior: A Cancer Prayer Support Group will meet from 2-3 p.m. at Darrow Road Wesleyan Church, 4020 S. Darrow Road. Current cancer patients, those in remission and their caregivers are encouraged to attend. Call (715) 399-8885.

Duluth: The College of St. Scholastica invites the public to its annual Advent Vespers service followed by a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, starting at 4:30 p.m. The service takes place in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, followed at about 5:15 p.m. by the lighting of the tree in front of Tower Hall's main entrance.
