The last saltie of the 2018 shipping season departed Saturday evening from the Twin Ports.

The Federal Rhine, whose home port is Bridgetown, Barbados, departed from the Twin Ports around 4:50 p.m. The 656-foot vessel loaded durum wheat Friday at the CHS elevator in Superior. That wheat will wind up in Italy, where it will likely be turned into pasta and shipped back to the U.S., according to the port.

The Federal Rhine is expected to clear the St. Lawrence Seaway before it closes at the end of the month. Domestic shipping is expected to continue until the Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie closes Jan. 15.
