The Sutherland family put the final touches on the interior of their new storefront at 1420 Belknap St. on Friday, May 28. Sutherland CBD officially opens for business in the new space, which was formerly Curves, June 1, but customers were already stopping in Friday for CBD-infused products ranging from dog treats to coffee.
Sutherland CBD launched its first store three years ago on Superior’s Tower Avenue and expanded to three additional locations: Duluth’s Lakeside neighborhood, Ashland and Arizona. The Ashland store shut down prior to the pandemic, but the Arizona store closed down during the pandemic slowdown as the business shifted its focus to online, delivery and pickup sales.
“We completely had to adapt,” said brand manager Craig Sutherland, but the move opened their business up to nationwide sales.
The new shop has a smaller retail footprint than the original store, but more space for storage and shipping fulfillment. The business offers free, same-day delivery within 10 miles of Superior and does a brisk wholesale business as well.
Sutherland said the move to the new location was prompted by the sale of the Tower Avenue building, but it puts the business in a great downtown spot with parking right out front.
“I love the location,” he said. It's centrally located and still within the city’s Business Improvement District.
A city small business grant and a grant from the BID helped with the buildout of the new store, Sutherland said. He encouraged businesses to apply for the funding, and gave shout-outs to the BID and Superior-Douglas County Chamber of Commerce for their support with the move.
The family business employs six between the two Twin Ports stores, including Sutherland’s parents and niece. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. A ribbon-cutting at the new storefront will take place at noon June 1.
