A longtime Superior business closed its doors for good Friday, Nov. 22. Dunbar’s Supply Inc. has been providing food service and janitorial supply products since 1939.

Owner Arlyn Hunter-Jensen has been involved with the family business since age 10. It was founded by her great aunt and uncle Florence and Clifford Dunbar and later owned by her father. Hunter-Jensen has owned the business since 2007. She said she’ll miss the customers, some of whom have been coming to Dunbar’s “forever,” but is looking forward to retirement.

Dunbar’s Supply Inc. first opened at 706 Tower Ave., moved to 720 Tower in 1951, then moved to 1413 Tower Ave. The food service supply store has been at its current location, 1707 N. Fifth St., since 2007.

Hunter-Jensen said the building has been sold to Interstate Batteries and remaining inventory would be picked up and sold at auction. Dunbar's employees have already retired or found new jobs. They encountered a mixed bag of reactions from customers who learned that the store was closing, including surprise. Business has been good at Dunbar’s.

“I just had the opportunity to retire and I’m ready,” Hunter-Jensen said.
