A supplier to Duluth's New Page paper mill will build a production facility and bring up to 10 jobs to Superior next year.
Minerals Technologies will provide New Page with up to 70,000 tons of precipitated calcium carbonate per year, starting in the middle of 2011. The product, known as PCC, is used in making paper smoother and brighter.
"All our materials will go to New Page, and as we expand, we hope for new customers and to grow the facility," said Rick Honey, vice president of investor relations and corporate communications for Minerals Technologies.
The PCC will be made in Superior and transported by truck to the mill in Duluth. Prior to the agreement, New Page used another product that needed to be transported by rail from southeastern states.
"Our motivation is reducing the cost of our product and improving the quality," said Lucas McLeod, New Page's paper system manager in Duluth. He said the switch to PCC will not change staffing at the mill.
