Enbridge Inc. announced plans last week to expand the capacity of its Lakehead pipeline system through Superior.

The $400 million project will be accomplished through increased pumping horsepower. No pipeline construction is involved, according to an Enbridge news release.

The capacity of the Alberta Clipper pipeline between Neche, N.D., and Superior will be increased from 450,000 barrels per day to 570,000 barrels per day. The Southern Access pipeline between Superior and Flanagan, Ill., will be increased from 400,000 barrels per day to 560,000 barrels per day.

The expanded capacity is expected to be in service in mid-2014, according to the Enbridge release.

The capacities and costs could increase, Enbridge said, depending on discussions with shippers.

"Both Alberta Clipper and Southern Access have substantial, low-cost expansion potential," said Stephen J. Wuori, president of Liquids Pipelines for Enbridge. "The current projects will just tap the first layer of that potential, leaving plenty of scope for further expansions in the future."
