A full-service tobacco, vape and CBD shop is moving into the former “Chicken Spur” at 502 Hammond Ave.
Jamie Andrews, co-owner of Ignite Vapor and Tobacco, confirmed the business plans to open at the iconic gas station in mid-January. This will be the third Ignite location. The others are in Spooner and Hayward.
“The expansion to Superior was decided because of the prime location and two of the three owners went to college at the University of Minnesota Duluth and are very familiar with the old ‘Chicken Spur,’” Andrews said.
The announcement comes at a time of change for the tobacco industry. The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday, Nov. 15, imposed sharp sales restrictions on flavored e-cigarettes and announced plans to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.
“We'll be very diligent in complying with all FDA regulations,” Andrews said.
The business will card customers at the door and hire workers who are age 21 or older.
“We don’t allow anyone in our stores to enter that is not 18 with a valid ID,” Andrews said.
The owners plan to gut the building and pull out the walk-in coolers for the remodel, opening up more space than former Spur customers remember. The parking lot will be improved and the outbuildings taken down as well.
The business will carry a large selection of vape devices and e-liquid as well as tobacco products and supplies, including roll-your-own tobacco, cigars, loose snuff and a walk-in humidor.
“We just want to provide a service where something’s lacking,” Andrews said. “We want guys headed out to the golf course to come and grab their cigars. We want to offer safe alternatives to cigarettes like vape products. We’re also really looking to capitalize on the CBD market and help as many people as we can.”
Ignite Vapor and Tobacco has partnered with PriceLand out of Black River Falls to provide cannabidiol oil, or CBD, products. Made from industrial hemp, a close relative of marijuana, CBD products contain less than 0.3 percent of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
“CBD is really taking off. It’s a great tool to help people,” Andrews said. “We have lots of regular customers who we’ve helped with anything from seizures to PTSD to anxiety, depression, chronic pain.”
