In everyone's life, at some time, we are faced with sorting through the material goods of the most beloved people in our lives. Parents, grandparents and others have lived lives that included passions for music, art, furniture, hunting and what they thought important to them is what remains for us to sort out when they pass away. The amount of "stuff" can be staggering in some cases. It isn't a character flaw of our loved ones, simply these "things" held importance to them.
In 1976, Dale Botten and Sheldon Bergen (alias Ron Rogers) of the Twin Ports, produced, marketed and sold one of the most unique and thought provoking products since the Pet Rock. For years, you have heard from friends and relatives when they tell you that they want nothing for Christmas or their birthdays ... this year you will be able to make their dreams come true once again. The Douglas County Historical Society has in its possession a new "old stock" of the original "nothing" that was sold throughout the upper Midwest and regions further.
Well fall has descended, and quite honestly, I was ready for the change. One of the big reasons that I live here is for the change of seasons and weather. Although I hail from Kettle River, Minn., I lived in Nashville, Tenn., and Austin, Texas, before moving back in 2011 and there is no other place like Wisconsin and Minnesota for a better chance of our children having a safe childhood ... a Lake Wobegon kind of childhood maybe.
