A Grand Portage woman burned down her own home in an effort to “destroy a bad spirit,” according to charges filed Wednesday. Lori Jean Dahmen, 46, was arrested Tuesday evening after she reportedly used a cigarette lighter to set fire to a bed in the house at 71 Townsite Road. Authorities reported that she was intoxicated. Dahmen’s son, who was also home at the time, escaped without injury. The residence was considered a total loss.
DULUTH — The beds have been made at the Duluth Detoxification Center's new opioid withdrawal unit. Now, officials are eager to see them filled. HIBBING, Minn.—A Hibbing murder defendant was found competent to proceed in court Thursday, nearly six months after his case was put on hold while he underwent a mental health evaluation. Benjamin David Lundquist, 32, of Grand Rapids, is accused of fatally stabbing Joel Dean Gangness inside an apartment building in January. Lundquist allegedly admitted that he knocked on Gangness' door and confronted him at random, stating that he stabbed and bludgeoned the victim because "Jesus directed him to do it," according to a criminal complaint.
DULUTH, Minn. — Eric Ringsred, a Duluth property owner and preservationist, owes more than $2.5 million in unpaid federal taxes over the past decade, the Internal Revenue Service said in a recent document filed in St. Louis County. The IRS in May issued a federal lien against Ringsred, reporting that he has failed to pay significant taxes on personal income for each year from 2007 to 2014.
WRENSHALL, Minn. — A Carlton County man allegedly carved the word "snitch" into a 17-year-old hostage's chest and circulated a Snapchat photo of the victim tied to a chair with a bag over his head. Scott Kendrick Lindgren, 21, was charged Thursday, May 18, with seven felonies in the alleged kidnapping and assault Monday at his home in Silver Brook Township, near Wrenshall. The teen, who is from Duluth but was not identified by authorities, also suffered serious head injuries and burns to his neck, according to a criminal complaint.

DULUTH, Minn.—A judge has imposed a deadline for prosecutors to turn over the identities of two key witnesses to defense attorneys in a Duluth homicide case. Sixth Judicial District Judge Mark Munger said the St. Louis County Attorney's Office must disclose the names by June 1 to attorneys representing the five defendants charged in connection with the fatal shooting of University of Minnesota Duluth student William Grahek.
DULUTH — At least nine people witnessed a Superior, Wis., woman fatally strike a good Samaritan who came to her aid after her vehicle skidded off London Road on Tuesday, according to charges filed Friday, April 7. Theresa Marie Katzmark, 49, was arraigned in State District Court in Duluth on a felony charge of criminal vehicular homicide in the death of 62-year-old Donna Ruth Estrem of Duluth.
DULUTH, Minn.—A 62-year-old pedestrian was killed when she was struck by an SUV and thrown against an electrical box along London Road in Duluth on Tuesday, according to police and a witness at the scene. The Duluth Police Department confirmed that the woman died when she was struck near the intersection of London Road and 40th Avenue East around 12:40 p.m. Authorities said the vehicle was driven by a 49-year-old woman.
