A tradition is back when the dragon awakes Aug. 26 on Barker's Island. Teams of paddlers line up for the team parade that starts at 6 p.m. Aug. 26, followed by the opening ceremony and waking of the dragon at 6:30 p.m. The Lake City Smoking Section performs on the main stage after the ceremony and fireworks begin about 9:05 p.m.
All Route 16 buses to Superior will be traveling on the Bong Bridge until about mid-September as the bridge is reduced on one lane of travel to Duluth.

Roger and Suzanne LePage of Superior celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary with a family trip to Bayfield, Wis. The couple was married Aug. 16, 1986, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Superior. The couple has one daughter, Audra LePage. Roger is employed at Harbor City International School and CRSA. Suzanne is employed at Family Forum Inc.
Pastor Michael Casperson and his wife, Darlene, will be retiring from the ministry at Hope Congregational Church on Aug. 28, after 15 years of service. Their final service will be at 10:30 a.m. that day at Hope Church, 1827 Wyoming Ave. A potluck in their honor will be held immediately after the service in the fellowship hall. Everyone is invited to attend the service and the meal to follow.

Carl and Linda Peterson of Oakland celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 3. They will be honored with an open house on this day at the Parkland Town Hall, South Range. All friends and family are invited to join them for lunch from noon to 4 p.m. They have two daughters Christine (Randy) Smith, Theresa Townsend, both of Superior and one son Carl L. (Mindy) Peterson of Cold Spring, Minn. They have five grandchildren. Carl is a retired foreman for Douglas County Highway Department, and Linda is a retired dietary worker from Middle River Health Facility.
Collectible cars, motorcycles, and military vehicles are on display in the parking lot by the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center when Benna Ford, the Twin Ports Ford & Mustang Club and the Bong present the sixth annual Bong Center Benefit C 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event's sponsor, Benna Ford, also has new Ford vehicles on site to compliment the collector and military vehicles. There will also be food and beverages available to buy.

Tuesday Superior: Wisconsin Job Center hosts a number of workshops on career-related topics at 1805 N. 14th St. A job talk focusing on social media takes place at 9:30 a.m.; and learn about life skills at 11 a.m., financial literacy at 1 p.m. and employability skills at 2 p.m. Free.
