A Michigan woman who traded teaching for the Marine Corps and dungarees will be honored for her service this week during the Flag of Honor ceremony at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center. Margaret DeKiep was born to John and Nellie DeKiep on Feb. 22, 1919, in Grand Haven, Mich. She earned a teaching degree at Western Michigan University, a master's degree at the University of Michigan, and went to work teaching in Saginaw, Mich.
