Douglas County 4-H is taking registrations for two youth camps. Inventgenuity Camp features hands-on STEM activities for kids ages 8-11 and runs 1:30-4:30 p.m. June 18-22 in the 4-H Youth Building at the Head of the Lakes Fairgrounds. The cost is $25 for non-members, $15 for 4-H members; campers will take home some of the materials. The deadline to register is June 4.
It's official — the Douglas County Board approved an all-terrain vehicle route on County Highway W from State Highway 105 to Irondale Road. The 2.5-mile stretch was approved after voters in the village of Oliver overwhelmingly supported a referendum that called for opening all village roads to ATV traffic. The new route opens once the stretch of county highway is posted to show the new route.
The lakes draw many to live and take vacations in our beautiful area. However, a common injury for those who fish or just hang out near docks and boats is becoming "hooked" when the intended catch was a fish. The medical team at Essentia Health recommends removing the fish hook from your finger using the String Yank Technique: Remove hook from lure by cutting at the attachment ring. Then tape any additional free hooks to prevent the hooks from also getting embedded.
The Friends of the Head of the Lakes Fair meet at 7 p.m. June 6 in the multipurpose building (Curling Club) at the fairgrounds, 4700 Tower Ave. The group is looking for input and ideas for this year's fair. Information will be available for any vendors or crafters interested in securing a booth or outside location during the fair. Registration is also available online. A number of clean-up days are scheduled to spruce up the fairgrounds. Anyone interested in helping can call the fair office at (715) 394-7848.
The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center hosts a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for veterans July 2-7. The first of its kind, the trip begins in Ely, Minnesota, where the group will stay one night at Veterans on the Lake Resort before heading into the Boundary Waters on July 3. They will return to the resort on July 6 before heading home the following day. The trip is being outfitted by Canadian Waters.
Circuit Court Judge Kelly Thimm Scott Michael Haberling of Clay County, Minnesota, and Allison Mary Johnson-Haberling of Douglas County granted a divorce April 11. Joint legal custody of one minor child awarded. Name change to Allison Mary Johnson granted.
Push Inc. and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College are partnering to offer the new utility construction technician program. WITC is accepting students to the two-semester program for the fall 2018 semester at the Rice Lake campus. Classes start in October to accommodate contractors' seasonal work schedule.
All city offices close Monday to observe the Memorial Day holiday. Residents with Monday garbage service are asked to have their garbage out by 7 a.m. Tuesday; all other residents should place their garbage out by 7 a.m. on their regular scheduled day but there may be delays in pickup. Eleni Pinnow, PhD, associate professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, was elected to be a fellow in the Midwestern Psychological Association. Fellow status is the highest honor an association member can earn, requiring evidence of significant contributions to the discipline of psychology or service to organization. Pinnow was recognized for her professional accomplishments, publications and conference presentations. Pinnow is the Behavioral Neuroscience Program coordinator at UWS, and the senior year experience coordinator.
Over the last two and a half years, Babies Need Boxes Northland has served more than 1,000 Twin Ports families. The nonprofit organization provided expectant parents with a free baby box filled with items for their newborn, patterned after a Finnish tradition. Babies Need Boxes Northland will dissolve after May 30, according to Amanda Lindquist, director of northland operations.
