The president of the company that wants to open a $1.5 billion iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin faces charges for contaminating an emergency water supply at a mine in Spain. Antonio Ramos is the mining investigator for the Spanish environmental coalition “Ecologists in Action”. For 13 years, he’s been monitoring a string of copper mines near the city of Seville. He says the mines have had trouble with pollution, including the Cobre Las Cruces copper mine.
Cutting hours at post offices in rural Wisconsin communities will continue for another year. So far, the Postal Service said people are grudgingly accepting it. The cuts began a year and a half ago, and included the small post office in Herbster along Lake Superior’s shore. Hours were cut in half, and the service window is only open in the morning now. Janine Hahn works at Pine Cone Ole’s Restaurant nearby. “We’ve adjusted,” Hahn said. “It doesn’t mean they like it. I know a lot of people complained about it and others just didn’t care. I did care.
Salvation Army red kettles are coming up short across Wisconsin this Christmas season. Milwaukee County’s goal is $3.5 million, and they’re almost a million dollars short of that. Salvation Army Major Steve Yoder says numbers are down statewide. He’s concerned yet hopeful. “In other places they’re much more hard hit and we’re sorry for that.
