The Hayes Court baseball complex will be buzzing this weekend with more than 20 teams playing in four different tournaments. The American Legion District Tournament began Thursday and will run through the championship game at noon Saturday. The Gary Gustafson Last Chance Baseball Tournament begins today with 10 teams entered in the 12U tournament and five teams each in the 11U and intermediate tournaments. The Superior Reds are hosting the American Legion event at Morrie Arnovich Field.
Maggie Lattery shot par on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to win the Nemadji Women's Invitational Wednesday afternoon at the Nemadji Golf Course. Lattery, a 2008 Northwestern High School graduate, and Deb Showalter, who won last year at Nemadji, finished tied after 18 holes with rounds of 78 on the East-West course. Silver Bay's Norma O'Leary was third with a 79, and Luck's Avery Steen was fourth with an 80. Ian McCoshen, the son of Superior native Kevin McCoshen, was selected by the Florida Panthers with the first pick in the second round (31st overall) in Sunday's National Hockey League entry draft at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Most people know how spring's late arrival this year affected the local sport scene. High school baseball teams were limited to playing only a dozen of their regularly scheduled 20 games; area golf courses lost a ton of money when their openings were a month later than last year; and the UW-Superior softball team didn't even get to play a home game because of unplayable fields.
