The countdown has started. My wife has a big sheet in our living room with "four weeks" written on it. Each Monday another week comes down. My wife thinks it's all about awaiting our little arrival, but lately I've been waiting for a departure. It seemed like such a good idea at first. My wife was going to go through some physical changes that we planned to photograph every couple of weeks, so I thought up an idea to join her. As her belly grew so would my beard. I call it my "Baby Beard." Think of it as an extreme playoff beard.
OK my hefty friend; this is your last chance. Look over your letters one last time. It's Jed; J-E-D. I'm going to level with you, this is the last list you'll be getting from me. It's my 34th Christmas, and you've visited me many times throughout the years, but this is my last letter. Now, you'll be getting a list from my house, but next Christmas it won't be from me. Next Christmas the letter will come from my son; he'll join us sometime in late March.
It's that time of year again, when adults in rural areas show up at the grocery store or gas station wearing three shades of blaze orange. I've spent some time out in the woods near Oulu, helping my father-in-law move stands to spots we've scouted and think will be good for rifle season. I'm optimistic that my third hunting season will be successful. Really, it can't get any worse than last year. I didn't even see a deer the whole season. I spent my time freezing in a little hut, waiting to go back to the house. But this is a new year and good things happen in 3s, right?
It's not every day that you get the opportunity to compete against an NCAA Division I recruit, but I got the chance to go head-to-head with one Friday afternoon right here in Superior. I bet some of you are thinking I played a little hoops with Superior High School's Joel Lindberg, who is headed to North Dakota State University. That's a good guess, but I went head-to-head with the newest Division I recruit from Superior, Sharita Turner. Turner signed her letter of intent to join the bowling team at Prairie View A&M University on Thursday afternoon at Landmark Lanes.
More than 75 kids had a chance to share the pool at Superior High School with a couple of Olympic swimmers Sunday afternoon. Josh Davis, a two-time Olympian and winner of five Olympic medals, and Josh Schneider, United States National Team member and current United States record holder in the 50 meter freestyle, joined swimmers from the Superior YMCA and the area during a Mutual of Omaha Breakout! Swim Clinic at SHS. The clinic was developed by Davis and Mutual of Omaha to inspire and motivate a new generation of swim stars.
With only a one day before Christmas, I hope you didn't forget about your favorite Superior Telegram photographer. If I did slip your mind here is my Christmas list for our area. Of course, I would certainly take a new Nikon and 70-200 mm F2.8 lens. New lights for Ole Haugsrud Field. I talked to a person from a magazine somewhere in Wisconsin who informed me that Superior was nominated for the worst football field in the state, mostly because of the lighting. I've been spoiled by the great lights at Northwestern's field, and I would love to get that light in Superior.
The Great Northern Classic Rodeo wraped up three action packed days in Superior on Sunday afternoon. Fans that came out witnessed bareback riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, bull riding and much more. It was the 19th year of the Great Northern Classic Rodeo.
