LAPORTE, Minn. — A 42-year-old Iowa man and his 4-year-old child died after their kayak overturned on Hart Lake on Saturday, May 19. The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office responded to the lake at about 1:26 p.m. Saturday after a family member of the victims reported that the kayak had overturned and not come up to the surface of the water.
LEGIONVILLE, Minn. -- A monstrous floating bog -- about the size of three football fields -- is refusing to leave without a fight from the spot it floated into on a northern Minnesota lake north of Brainerd. The bog has been lodged in North Long Lake in front of the Minnesota American Legion’s Legionville School Safety Patrol Training Center since last fall.
CLOQUET, Minn. -- Authorities are investigating the death of a worker at paper and pulp mill in Cloquet on Tuesday, May 15. “We are shocked and saddened to confirm the death of Mr. Ryan Martin,” Sappi corporate spokeswoman Olga Karagiannis wrote in an email Wednesday. “Sappi is investigating and working with authorities to understand the cause of death.” The company did not offer any further information on the circumstances of Martin’s death. Cloquet Police Department and Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry officials also did not immediately have further details.
FORADO, Minn. — A man who was assaulted outside of a bar and grill has died from his injuries. Steven "Beaver" Hlinsky, 46, a long-time Forada firefighter, died Sunday afternoon, May 13, at his home, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, which received a 911 call from the Hlinsky residence. Hlinsky, who was unresponsive when first responders arrived, was pronounced and an autopsy has been ordered, according to the Sheriff's Office.
BABBIT, Minn. -- The body of a missing northern Minnesota woman was found Tuesday near Babbitt, more than 2 miles from where her vehicle was located in February. Tawhna Jolee Pringle, 30, of Grand Rapids was last seen at about 10:30 p.m. Jan. 11 on a convenience store surveillance camera near Babbitt. Her ex-husband reported her missing Jan. 27 after she hadn’t been seen or heard from for more than two weeks.
ST. PAUL—Minnesota state health officials are investigating an outbreak of E. coli related to romaine lettuce from the Yuma region. The Minnesota Department of Health is working with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and public health agencies in other states to investigate an outbreak. Information on the national outbreak can be found on CDC's and FDA's websites.
NEW LONDON, Minn. — A New London boy died Wednesday after being injured last month in a car crash. According to the family's CaringBridge site, Nathaniel Shumaker, 11, died at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He was critically injured March 28 when a vehicle driven by his brother, Josh Shumaker, 16, collided with a semi-truck on state Highway 23 near Paynesville.
PERHAM, Minn. -- A 21-year-old Pine River man is custody after two people were killed at a rural Perham home early Tuesday, April 17. The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the deaths as homicides. Sheriff’s deputies responded at 5:17 a.m. to a call of an assault at the home, Chief Deputy Barry Fitzgibbons said in a news release. When deputies arrived, they found two people dead, he said.
DULUTH — The Winnipeg Jets were supposed to fly into Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Saturday, April 14, but had their charter flight diverted to Duluth because of a massive spring snowstorm that converged on the Twin Cities. Air Canada Flight 7017 arrived in Duluth a little after 2 p.m. Saturday and headed back to Winnipeg a little after 4:30 p.m. According to workers with Monaco Air, the team stayed on the plane, waiting in Duluth hoping things would clear up.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Two people have been arrested and charged with Third Degree Murder in connection with the death of a 6-year-old boy here, and his sibling has been taken into protective custody. Bobbie Christine Bishop, 40, and Walter Henry Wynhoff, 44, both of Fergus Falls, were being held Tuesday, April 10, in Otter Tail County Jail and both are charged with Third Degree Murder.
