Sunday is the 50th anniversary of a storm that drowned four people -- three brothers went out onto the pier and were swept off the pier by the waves, and one of the three Coast Guard members who attempted to rescue them also drowned. Tom Mackay was a friend of Edgar Culbertson, the Coast Guard member who drowned, and sits by a plaque honoring him in Canal Park. (Clint Austin / Forum News Service)

NIGHT LIGHTS - The Alpena lights up the lighthouse on Wisconsin Point as it departs the Superior Entry on Thursday night, revealing scaffolding around the structure. The U.S. Coast Guard commissioned a project to restore the eaves along. Deterioration of the eaves was discovered a couple years ago when the roof on the 1913 lighthouse was replaced, said MK1 Thomas Frazier of the U.S. Coast Guard in Duluth. The project is near completion.
