UWS ROUND-UP: Watson scores twice in UWS win

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer team had five players score six goals in a 6-2 UMAC win over North Central University on Saturday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Eric Watson scored two goals to give him 11 this season as UWS overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit with a five-goal splurge in the second half.

After Watson’s first goal in the 27th minute, Josue Boutouli scored both goals for the Rams (4-6-3 overall, 2-6-3 UMAC) in a span of less than five minutes.

Adrian Leal, Harry Simpson, Watson, Blake Doyea and Gunnar O’Neill-Sengbush scored second-half goals for UWS (11-6-1, 8-1-1), which is two points behind league-leading St. Scholastica.

Superior had 26 shots, including 23 in the second half.

Dalton VonKaenel had two saves for the Yellowjackets and Gabe Hartwig stopped 12 shots for the Rams.

The Yellowjackets host Northland College Wednesday and Minnesota Morris Saturday. Both games begin at 3:15 p.m.

Women’s soccer

Emma Street tallied two first-half goals 97 seconds apart to lead UWS to a 4-1 UMAC victory over North Central University on Saturday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Britt Zieroth and Hailey Kontny also scored for the Yellowjackets (4-11-1 overall, 3-6-1 UMAC), whose goalkeeper, Bailey Henderson, made seven saves.

The Rams’ Cheyenne Brown scored a goal in the 45th minute to make it 2-1 at halftime.

UWS hosts Northland College Wednesday and Minnesota Morris Saturday at the NBC Sports Complex. Both games begin at 1 p.m.

Volleyball

Minnesota-Morris spoiled Senior Day for the Yellowjackets with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-14) victory Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The Cougars (24-6 overall, 13-2 UMAC) outhit UWS (16-11, 9-5) .297 to .009 in the victory.

Mia Frick and Marissa Ekness led Morris with 10 kills apiece, while Mara Cameron’s eight kills led the Yellowjackets.

UWS also got 20 assists from Emily VerWay; and 17 digs from Mackenzie Dahlin.

The Yellowjackets play at Northland College in Ashland at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

UWS wraps up the regular season with matches at North Central on Friday and Hamline on Saturday.

Hockey

The UWS men and women open their respective seasons Friday.

The Yellowjacket men play at Lake Forest at 7 p.m. Friday and at Concordia (Wis.) at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The UWS women open against Concordia (Wis.) at 7 p.m. Friday in St. Cloud and then host Gustavus Adolphus at 2 p.m. Saturday.
