UWS ROUND-UP: Three Yellowjackets pick up UMAC honors

Body:

For the first time in the outdoor season and the second time overall in 2016-17, University of Wisconsin-Superior sophomore Taylor Phillips has earned the title of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

In two meets last week, the former Superior Spartan earned three top-five finishes in six events.

At Hamline on Wednesday evening, Phillips placed fifth in the shot put and was 10th in the discus with a new personal record of 36.39 meters.

Then at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Phillips upped her game and placed second in the shot put with a personal-record mark of 12.41 meters and placed fourth in the discus with a new personal record 38.07 meters.

Phillips is now first on the UMAC honor roll in both the shot put and the discus.

The UWS track teams will be back in action at 3 p.m. today at the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge.

Wirtz honored

UWS continues to dominate the UMAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week award with Fauston Wirtz becoming the latest Yellowjacket to take home the honor.

Wirtz, a sophomore from Esko, won the hammer throw Saturday at Gustavus and bettered his previous best by more than 13 meters. Wirtz hit a mark of 50.45 meters, which was good for a third place finish and put him at the top of the UMAC chart.

Softball

Wednesday’s doubleheader with the University of Northwestern was postponed due to unplayable field conditions and will be made up at 3:30 p.m. today at Liebaert Field.

The Yellowjackets (13-12, 6-4 UMAC) will also play two games at Bethany Lutheran at 1 p.m. Saturday, then wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader at North Central on April 29.

Baseball

Cory Albertson slugged his way to UMAC Athlete of the Week honors and helped the Yellowjackets go 3-1 against Northland and Finlandia last week.

Albertson, a freshman utility player from Stillwater, Minn., hit .417 (5-for-12), with three of his hits being home runs. He also scored six runs.

Albertson homered in each game of a doubleheader with Northland College. In the second game he picked up an assist, throwing out a base runner at third from right field.

He followed up that performance on Friday against Finlandia, when he added his third homer of the week in the first game of the doubleheader. He also pitched the final inning in the game.

UWS fell to 7-19 and 3-5 in the UMAC with a pair of loss to St. Scholasitca Wednesday at Wade Stadium.

In the opener, the first-place Saints (19-6, 8-0) recorded a season-high 20 hits in a 19-4 rout.

Senior shortstop Tyler Duex paced the CSS offense with three hits, including a double and a triple, while collecting five RBIs.

Joey Zwak and Trevor Bernsdorf also had three-hit days as eight Saints batters had multiple hits.

The Saints opened the game with four runs in the first inning, before pulling away with an 11-run fourth.

Chad Patko led UWS with two hits and two RBIs. Former Superior Spartan Nick Mattson doubled, singled and knocked in a run, and Nick McNosky had two hits.

In the nightcap, the Saints scored eight first-inning runs to top UWS 11-3.

The Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead in the first, but CSS took the lead for good in the bottom half of the opening frame, before adding three runs in the fifth.

Bernsdorf went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Former Superior Spartan Grant Rindal earned the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out four in five innings.

UWS had five hits, one each by McNosky, Patko, Travis Miller, Matthew Boyde and Spencer Lawniczak.

UWS hosts Crown College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and plays two games at Macalester at 1 p.m. Sunday.
