UWS women remain undefeated in UMAC

The University of Wisconsin Superior women’s basketball team improved to 10-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference season with a pair of wins over the weekend at Mortorelli Gym.

The Yellowjackets defeated North Central 84-55 Friday evening then downed Northwestern 72-43 Saturday afternoon.

UWS, which never trailed Saturday, jumped all over the Eagles by taking a 10-1 lead six minutes into the contest.

Eva Reinertsen had a team-high 16 points off the bench as UWS won its fifth straight game.

Leading 33-17 through two quarters, the Yellowjackets totaled 26 points in the third quarter to take a 26-point lead into the final frame.

Hannah Norlin added 12 points and eight rebounds for UWS, while Tiffany Stubbs had a team-high 10 points for Northwestern.

Hailey Kontny had a team-high 18 points and six rebounds to lead UWS on Friday night.

After outscoring the Rams 19-17 in the opening quarter, the Yellowjackets went on a 27-2 run in the second quarter to take a 50-22 advantage into halftime.

UWS plays at Finlandia (Hancock, Mich.) at 5:30 p.m. Friday and at Northland (Ashland) at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s basketball

UWS split on the weekend, defeating North Central 81-71 Friday night, then losing on a last-second shot in a 83-81 defeat to Northwestern Saturday evening.

Cody Sprenger hit a last-second jumper to lead Northwestern over the Yellowjackets on Saturday.

Sprenger had a game-high 25 points for the Eagles.

UWS led 47-37 at the half and by as many as 11 in the opening minutes of the second half. But the Eagles went on a 9-1 run to tie the game at 77 with 2:44 to play. Northwestern tied the game again at 81 with a pair of free throws with 31 seconds to go before Sprenger’s game-winner.

Shaq Coleman led the Yellowjackets (4-13, 4-6) with 21 points.

Rafael Monteiro’s double-double led UWS past North Central on Friday.

Monteiro had 14 boards and 22 points, while Scott Montroy added 22 points.

Women’s hockey

UWS lost a pair of 4-1 games to the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds over the weekend.

Three of UWEC’s four goals Friday in Eau Claire came on the power play.

Hailey Adair scored for the Yellowjackets and Kim Kobar finished with 23 saves. Erin Conolly had 16 saves for the Blugolds.

Superior’s Kaleigh Martinson scored 3:03 into the first period of Saturday’s game at Wessman Arena, but UWEC answered with two goals apiece in the second and third periods.

Natasha Singer had 27 saves for UWS and Conolly 12 for UWEC, including just two in the second period and one in the third.

UWS plays at UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. Friday and hosts UWRF at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Track and field

UWS hosted its first of two indoor track and field meets at Thering Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon, and the men’s and women’s teams posted fieldhouse records, meet records, and personal records.

Yellowjackets’ C.J. Pillath tossed a personal-best 17.78-meter weight throw to claim victory in the event, while Tommy Fleming finished second with a 16.13-meter throw.

Thomas Udenberg finished second in the shot put (14.88 meters), while on the women’s side, former Superior Spartan Taylor Phillips finished just a tenth of a meter short of her personal best for a second-place finish (12.23 meters).

Elsewhere in the field, UWS had personal-best performances and third-place finishes in the pole vault by both Valerie Rowe for the women and Tyler Moderman-Anderson for the men; junior Svenja Ruehl set a meet record in the women’s long jump; and Nate Welty finished third in the high jump.

Rowe picked up a first-place finish as well in the 200-meter hurdles, running a facility record and personal-best time of 28.21; in the 60-meter hurdles Maria Mazo set a personal record with a second-place time of 9.76; Kelli Praska finished second in the 600; and Leann Torgerson was third in the 60-meter dash.

The men’s team was led on the track by the 4-by-200-meter relay team of former Spartan Alex Dzikonski, Matt Carlson, Noah Potratz and Alex Fathie, who finished second.

Aaron Gehrke set a collegiate-best time of 56.01 while finishing third in the 400-meter dash.

UWS will compete at UW-Stout at noon Saturday host the Yellowjacket Open on Feb. 11.
