UWS hoop teams go 3-1 on weekend

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball strengthened its hold on first place in the UMAC with a pair of road wins over the weekend.

The Yellowjackets (8-3 overall, 5-0 UMAC) won 78-61 over Bethany Lutheran Friday in Mankato, and 86-60 over Martin Luther Saturday in New Ulm, Minn.

Former Superior Spartan Hailey Kontny scored a season-high 23 points and Hannah Norlin added 18 in Saturday’s win over MLC. Both also had eight rebounds.

Norlin and Kontny also had 15 points apiece in Friday’s win over Bethany Lutheran. Norlin also had 10 rebounds.

UWS hosts Alverno College at  2 p.m. on Dec. 29.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: Kontny was named the UMAC’s Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. She scored 38 points in the two wins, averaged eight rebounds per game and shot 48 percent from the field.

Men’s basketball

UWS snapped its 10-game losing streak with a 93-73 UMAC win over Martin Luther College on Saturday night in New Ulm, Minn.

Freshman Rafael Monteiro recorded a double-double for the Yellowjackets (2-10 overall, 1-6 UMAC) by scoring a game-high 21 points and adding 13 rebounds. Nate Kalien added 14 points, and Christian Sellers and Trevor Oswald came off the bench to score 13 and 10 points, respectively.

T.J. Babinec had 20 points for Martin Luther.

UWS couldn’t overcome a 14-point first half deficit before falling to Bethany Lutheran College on Friday night.

The Yellowjackets were led by Monteiro, who scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half.

Montroy Scott added 13 points; Seller was next with 11 points and Andreas Preisler and Shaq Coleman both had 10.

The Yellowjackets return to action Dec. 30 at Bethel in Arden Hills, Minn.
