Blue Devils powers past Yellowjackets

NOTE: This story will be updated.

Two power-play goals and an empty-netter helped UW-Stout defeat the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team 5-3 Friday night at Wessman Arena.

The host Yellowjackets rallied twice to tie the game in the third period (1-1 and 3-3), but Adam Kresl’s goal with 3:27 remaining turned out to be the game-winner and Joe Anderson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 29.7 seconds left.

The loss drops Superior to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC. Stout evens its records at 5-5 and 1-1.

Stout’s Dylan Zins scored the only goal of the first period at the 15:48 mark. The scoring play started when a Superior turnover led to a 2-on-1 breakaway and ended with Zins’ scoring on a one-timer after an across-the-crease pass from Tom Schmidt.

After a scoreless second period the Yellowjackets and Blue Devils exploded for seven goals in the third period. Unfortunately for the home team, four of the goals came off the sticks of Stout players.

Former Superior Spartan Daniel Litchke tied the game at 1-1 for the Yellowjackets with his eighth goal of the season 3:18 into the third period.

Stout took a 2-1 lead at 6:35 when Mathias Ahman scored during a 5-on-3 power play and then took a 3-1 lead on Alex Toscano’s power-play goal at 11:47.

Brandon Anderson’s first goal of the season came 17 seconds later and Superior tied it up on Bruno Birzitis’ power-play goal on a shot from the top of the right circle at 15:07.

Stout’s Kresl found himself alone in the slot and put a shot over Superior goaltender for the eventual game-winning goal at 16:23.

Superior nearly tied the game again with 1:40 remaining when defenseman Jerry Miettunen hit the left post.

Soon after that the Yellowjackets pulled their goaltender, but Stout capitalized on Anderson’s empty-net goal.

Tommy Ahlgren finished with 22 saves for Stout sand Bryce Fink had 18 saves for Superior.

Superior hosts UW-Stevens Point at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The Yellowjackets will wear ugly sweaters, which will be auctioned off after the game.
