UWS hoop teams kick off 2016 with 4-0 weekend

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s and men’s basketball teams went a combined 4-0 over the weekend with wins at Minnesota Morris on Saturday and over Crown College on Sunday in St. Bonifacius.

The UWS men play at Minnesota Duluth at noon Wednesday and the Yellowjacket men and women host St. Scholastica on Saturday, at 3 and 5 p.m., respectively.

Yellowjacket women

UWS outscored Crown College 26-2 in the third quarter en route to winning its seventh straight game on Sunday.

Justine Larson made 7-of-10 shots from the field and scored a team-high 15 points for the ’Jackets (10-2 overall, 5-0 UMAC), who had 12 players score and remained on top of the conference. Larson also had three assists and two steals.

Crown (1-10, 0-5) shot only 28.5 percent from the field, including making just 7 of 34 shots in a second half in which Crown was outscored 49-15.

Allyssa Lindberg and Ceanne Harrison each finished with 12 points. The point total was a new career high for Harrison. Hailey Kontny was the only other Yellowjacket in double figures, finishing with 11 points.

Against Morris, UWS overcame an early deficit and Hadley Skalmoski led four players in double figures with 16 points.

Larson made 7-of-8 field goals and scored a career-high 15 points, while UWS teammates Sarah Lekson scored a season-high 13 points and Kontny chipped in with 11.

Skalmoski also had 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Yellowjacket men

The UWS men defeated Morris 85-74 and Crown College 85-66.

Against Morris, Zach Schradle scored 29 points in 29 minutes. His evening also included nine rebounds, six assists and making 9-of-18 field-goal attempts as well as 8-of-12 foul shots.

Brian Lindblom added 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of his career. He also had three assists.

Vid Milenkovic finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists; while Nate Kalien added 11 points.

The Yellowjackets made nine 3-point shots to prevent the Cougars (3-7, 1-3) from rallying in the second half.

UWS won its third straight game and improved to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the UMAC with Sunday’s win over Crown.

The Yellowjackets sprinted to an 18-point halftime lead and never looked back.

Lindholm led the Yellowjackets with 24 points and six rebounds. Kalien added 17 points, making all three of his 3-point attempts, and Montroy Scott tallied 16 points off the bench.

Schradle added 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

UWS hit 6-of-11 shots from 3-point  range.
