'JACKET ROUND-UP: UWS basketball and hockey teams in action

The University of Wisconsin-Superior basketball teams both went 2-0 over the weekend, while the Yellowjacket hockey teams went a combined 0-3 in non-conference action.

Women’s basketball

UWS rallied from a 12-point deficit to outscore Northland College 24-4 in the third quarter and post a 79-55 win over the Lumberjills Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

The Yellowjackets began the weekend with a 79-46 win over Finlandia Friday.

Hailey Kontny led UWS in scoring in both games. The former Spartan had 23 points in just 14 minutes against Finlandia, then scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds against Northland.

Also against Northland, Hannah Norlin had 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Grace Kennedy scored nine points with seven rebounds.

Former Northwood Evergreen Emily Wagner scored six points for Northland.

Superior’s Allyssa Lindberg added 14 points in the win over Finlandia (0-8).

The Yellowjackets (7-2 overall, 3-0 UMAC) are off until Dec. 29 when they host Marian College at 6 p.m.

Men’s hoops

Brian Lindblom had career highs of 32 points and 11 rebounds to lead UWS to an 83-76 nonconference victory over Finlandia Friday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. The Yellowjackets then had four players score in double figures in a 92-83 victory over Northland College on Saturday.

Against Finlandia, Zach Schradle chipped in 24 points and nine rebounds for the Yellowjackets, while Vid Milenkovic came off the bench to add 11 points and six rebounds.

Marcus Geralds had 22 points to lead Finlandia (1-6).

The Yellowjackets won their third straight game with the victory over Northland to improve to 4-4 overall, 2-1 UMAC.

UWS started strong in the second half, scoring 17 of the first 23 points to take a 59-47 lead on two free throws by Montroy Scott with 14:17 remaining.

Northland (0-9, 0-4) rallied to take a 75-73 lead on a Bryshaun Brown layup. But the Yellowjackets scored the next 13 points to go up 86-75 with 54 seconds left.

Lindblom and Schradle led UWS in scoring with 29 and 24 points, respectively.

Lindblom also had eight rebounds and four assists, while Schradle finished with his eighth double-double with 10 rebounds and a team-high six assists.

Milenkovic added 11 points and 6 rebounds off the bench, while Nate Kalien finished with 10 points.

UWS plays St. Olaf in the opening game of the UW-Eau Claire Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28.

Men’s hockey

Milwaukee School of Engineering pulled off a pair of last-minute victories over UWS this weekend at Wessman Arena.

In Friday’s 3-2 loss, the Yellowjackets allowed two third-period goals, including the game-winner with 16 seconds left.

In UWS’s 4-2 loss Saturday, MSOE scored with 53 seconds remaining, then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with seven seconds left to drop the Yellowjackets to 3-8-2 on the season.

On Friday, former Superior Spartan Daniel Litchke scored his third goal and Ian Ecklund followed with his fourth to give UWS a 1-0 lead in the second period.

MSOE cut the lead to 2-1 two minutes later, tied it up at 17:51 of the third period, then won the game on James Ring’s goal at 19:44.

Ethan Wood had 23 saves for UWS and Nick Kohn had 24 saves for MSOE.

On Saturday, MSOE led 2-0 when Ecklund scored for UWS at 11:10 of the third period.

Three goals were scored in the final minute of the third period, starting when MSOE’s Omor Mullan scored at 19:07. Superior’s Viktor Sallhag made it 3-2 at 19:26 and MSOE put the game away at 19:53 when Gage Christianson scored his first goal of the season into an empty net.

Wood had 16 saves for UWS and Zach Woodman stopped 32 shots for MSOE.

Women’s hockey

The Yellowjackets allowed a goal 45 seconds into the game and fell behind 3-0 after two periods before losing to Concordia-Moorhead 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.

The loss drops UWS to 6-6-3 on the season.

Karen Larson scored for UWS 29 seconds into the third period with an assist by Leah Elledge.

The Cobbers made it 4-1 at 4:48 on Amber Schaack’s second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

Natasha Singer had 15 saves for UWS and Andrea Klug stopped 32 shots for Concordia-Moorhead.

UWS’s next game is Jan. 8 at St. Catherine.
