Former University of Wisconsin-Superior athletic director and men’s hockey coach Steve Nelson will be honored prior to tonight’s men’s hockey game against the St. Norbert Green Knights.

Nelson, who retired as the UWS Athletic Director this past fall, was hired to coach the Yellowjacket men’s hockey team in 1986 and built the program into a national powerhouse.

From 1992 through his final season in 2000 Nelson guided the Yellowjackets to eight NCAA tournaments in nine years. Seven times the Yellowjackets reached the NCAA Final Four, and three times they played in the national championship game.

The title of interim athletics director was added in 1996, with the interim tag being dropped a year later.

Nelson held both titles until he resigned in 2000 to become the commissioner of the America West Hockey League. In 2004, Nelson returned to UWS as full-time director of athletics.

The Yellowjackets and Green Knights will be meeting for the 67th time at 7:05 p.m. today at Wessman Arena.

St. Norbert leads the all-time series 34-21-12 in a series that dates back to the 1990-91 season.

The Green Knights are 21-5-8 against UWS since a 2002 loss in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals at the Cornerstone Community Center.

St. Norbert is also 11-8-9 all-time at Wessman Arena.

The last time they played, the Green Knights defeated the Yellowjackets 4-1 Feb. 2, 2013 in Green Bay.

UWS, which begins the weekend with a 3-2-1 overall record, is led in scoring by the line of Ian Ecklund (3 goals, 7 assists), former Superior Spartan Daniel Litchke (1-7) and Anton Svensson (5-2).
