’Jackets improve to 3-0-1

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team remained undefeated on the season with a win and tie over the weekend at Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets began the weekend with a 4-3 overtime win over Augsburg Friday night, then battled to a 1-1 overtime tie with St. Thomas on Saturday evening.

Anton Svensson’s goal 1:30 into overtime gave UWS its win over the Auggies and improved the Yellowjackets’ record to 3-0. Ian Eklund and former Superior Spartan Daniel Litchke assisted on the game-winning goal.

Eklund finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Litchke picked up a playmaker with three assists.

Viktor Sallhag’s power-play goal, his first collegiate tally, tied the game at 3-3 for UWS with 7:22 remaining in the third period.

Cory Simons of UWS and Brandon Johnson of Augsburg both had 34 saves.

Sophomore defenseman Brett Bukowski, a 2012 graduate of Superior High School, was in the starting lineup Augsburg.

Dan Kovar scored a first-period goal and goaltender Bryce Fink made 28 saves in Saturday’s tie for UWS.

UWS (3-0-1) took the lead 12:08 into the contest when Kovar scored unassisted with a shot from the red line.

Chris Benson scored for St. Thomas (1-1-2) with assists from John Kirtland and Nick Nielsen at 15:59 of the second period.

Joe Morris had 20 saves for the Tommies, who were 0-for-7 on power plays. UWS was 0-for-4 on power plays.

The Yellowjackets were outshot by St. Thomas 29-21, including 5-1 in the overtime period.

Bryce Fink finished with 28 saves for the Yellowjackets.

UWS plays at St. Olaf Friday and at Hamline Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m. and may be heard locally on KUWS 91.3 FM.
