Yellowjacket men advance with OT win at Stout

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team kept its season alive with a 4-3 overtime victory over UW-Stout Tuesday night at the Fanetti Community Center in Menomonie.

The Yellowjackets, who once lead 3-1 in the WIAC playoff play-in game, advanced on Anton Svensson’s goal at 6:49 of overtime.

UWS now advances to meet WIAC regular-season champion UW-Stevens Point (20-5) in a two-game semifinal series Friday and Saturday in Stevens Point. A mini-game would be used to determine the winner if each team wins one game.

UWS coach Dan Stauber also picked up his 249th win to pass Steven Nelson and become the school’s all-time winning hockey coach. Nelson won 248 games from 1986 through 2000.

The Blue Devils forced overtime Tuesday when Craig Lindegard scored with 11 seconds remaining. The goal also came after Stout pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker.

Jordan Shockley gave Superior a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the first period.

It went to 2-0 on Cody Hotchkin’s goal 2:09 into the second period.

Stout made it a 2-1 nine minutes later on Danny Ray’s goal and Superior regained a two-goal lead at 17:13 when Jordan Neduzak scored his seventh goal with an assist from Svensson.

Stout got within 3-2 on Tate Rusk’s goal at 7:06 of the third period.

Superior’s Bryce Fink and Stout’s Spencer Viele both finished with 35 saves.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: Superior lost at Stevens Point 7-0 last Saturday. … The overtime victory was the first in playoff action for the Yellowjackets since March 4, 2006, when B.J. Radovich scored off a faceoff to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 win at St. Norbert in the Peters Cup finals.
