UWS men skate to WIAC title game

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team advanced to the inaugural Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship with a sweep over UW-River Falls this weekend at Hunt Arena in River Falls.

The Yellowjackets (11-14-3) won Friday night’s game 2-1 then completed the sweep with a 4-0 victory Saturday night.

UWS will play UW-Eau Claire in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire. The Blugolds advanced with 1-0 and 2-1 wins over UW-Stevens Point.

The Blugolds advanced to the final game by winning Saturday’s game 1-0 and the mini-game 2-1 at UW-Stevens Point.

Dayn Belfour picked up both wins in goal for UWS with 28 saves on Friday and 33 more Saturday.

The shutout was Belfour second shutout of the season and fifth straight win. He is now 7-6-1 on the season.

Connor Faupel, Andy Singerhouse, Michael Rey and Pat Dalbec scored for UWS on Saturday and Dalbec and Brad Phenow scored on Friday.

Scott Lewan suffered both losses for River Falls (15-9-3), which won the regular-season WIAC crown. He stopped 26 Friday and 17 Saturday, including three in the second period and two in the third.

The Yellowjackets took four penalties for eight minutes in the game, while the Falcons took two for four minutes. Both teams were scoreless on the power play.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: The sweep by UWS was its first of the season and first playoff series sweep since 2010-11. … It was also the Yellowajckets’ third win in a row, marking the longest winning streak of the season. … Saturday’s game at UWEC may be heard live on 91.3 FM KUWS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
