UWS softball team drops opener
The UW-Superior softball team opened its season with a 5-2 loss to Bemidji State Tuesday afternoon at the West St. Paul Dome.
The Yellowjackets’ run came on home runs by Melissa Clark and Allie Nelson. Kristen Haider and Katie Wilke also had two hits each. One of Wilke’s hits was a double.
Nicolle Gross suffered the loss on the mound for UWS, allowing five runs (four earned) in 6 2/3 innings. She also allowed 15 hits with five strikeouts and three walks before Sarah Hendrickson got the final out in the Beavers’ three-run seventh inning.
Bemidji State (3-0) got three hits apiece from A. Robert and Dupay and two hits each from Yost, Krejci and Bergeson.
UWS has three games Wednesday: vs. Carlton at 9 a.m.; vs. Valley City State at 11 a.m.; and Bemidji State at 1 p.m.
