Lady ’Jackets stopped by Stout

The Yellowjackets are still in the playoff hunt, but their road became much more difficult Tuesday night after a 77-70 loss to UW-Stout in Superior.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team currently sits in fifth place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 5-8 record in the conference and a 12-10 record overall.

UW-Platteville (6-7, 12-10) moved into fourth place Tuesday with a 75-67 victory over UW-Stevens Point; and UW-La Crosse, UW-River Falls, UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire all remain in contention with four conference victories apiece.

“What we need to do is not worry about the last game but worry about the next game, play Superior basketball, and things will take care of themselves,” UWS coach Don Mulhern said. “It’s about the next game, and then the next one after that.”

Superior has three conference games remaining in the regular season. The first is Saturday against UW-La Crosse (4-10, 10-13). The Yellowjackets then play UW-River Falls on the road (4-9, 6-16) Wednesday and finish the season at UW-Oshkosh (11-2, 20-2) on Feb. 22.

Saturday’s game with UW-La Crosse will be the final home game of the regular season for the Yellowjackets.

“I’m really excited,” said Britnee Blake, the Yellowjackets’ only senior this season. “It’s Alumni Day too, so a lot of my friends — Connie Urmanski, Kristen Nett, Kailee McDonald, Hailey Hart, Hillary Peterson — they’re all coming back for that game.”

Blake, who graduated from Superior High School, said it will be sad to play her last game in Superior.

“But hopefully we can go out with a win,” she said.

UWS defeated UW-La Crosse 61-42 when the two teams played earlier this season. Saturday’s game begins at 3 p.m. in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

Against UW-Stout Tuesday night, the Yellowjackets fell behind in the first half. The Blue Devils led by four with eight minutes to play in the first half, but a 9-1 run over the next three minutes gave them a 34-22 lead.

UW-Stout’s Sami Schoeder hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run, and the Blue Devils finished the first half with seven shots from beyond the arc.

“They did a really good job of knocking down their open shots,” Mulhern said.

The Yellowjackets trailed 42-32 at halftime but bounced back in the second half. Sally Linzmeier cut the Blue Devils’ lead to 50-45 at 10:50 when she followed up a three-point play with a layup. Blake and Allyssa Lindberg then made it a one-point game by sinking a pair of free throws each.

Superior wasn’t able to take the lead until 7:45, when Blake hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Yellowjackets a 56-55 advantage. UWS pushed its lead to 63-60 with six minutes to play, but eight unanswered points from UW-Stout gave the Blue Devils the lead for good.

“We came out with fire in the second half,” Blake said. “We knew this was a game we should have won, but we just didn’t finish there at the end. We had it close.”

The Blue Devils made 42 percent of their 3-point attempts Tuesday, including 7-for-13 in the first half. UW-Stout entered Tuesday’s game shooting 20 percent from 3-point range.

Schoeder led all scorers with 20 points. Teammate Kyleigh Hebert added 18 points, which included going 10-for-14 at the free-throw line.

For the Yellowjackets, Linzmeier had 19 points and 14 rebounds. Brynn Liljander finished with 13 points.

“We had a much better second half, we just couldn’t quite get over the hump,” Mulhern said.
