The Superior High School wrestling team’s season is in full swing with the Spartans already splitting a pair of Heart O’ North Conference dual meets and competing in the Eau Claire North Invitational and Northwestern’s Robert Mackey Duals.

In dual action, the Spartans defeated Hayward 54-24 on Dec. 14 in the SHS gym and lost 49-27 at Barron on Dec. 7.

Superior went 2-1 in dual action Saturday at Northwestern and was led by Oscar Flaherty’s first-place finish at the ECN Husky Invite on Dec. 9.

Flaherty is currently 9-0 on the season at 220 pounds. He was undefeated Saturday at Northwestern and all four of his wins at ECN were by pin.

The Spartans began the season with 42 wrestlers, including 12 seniors and seven who were sectional qualifiers last season.

Leading the way are seniors Jack Androsky, conference champ and sectional qualifier; Logan  Stone, sectional qualifier; Brandon McClure, sectional qualifier and all-conference; Joe Carter, sectional qualifier; Dylan Lowney, sectional qualifiers and all-conference; and Flaherty, two-time conference champ and sectional qualifier.

Also returning is sophomore Caden Stone, a conference runner-up and sectional qualifier.

“All of our wrestlers are hard workers and very coachable,” said Coleman, who took over as coach of the Spartans last season and has coached for 36 years. “We have a nice time. Guys are working hard and we are ahead of where we were at last season.

“Again this year we have a number of first-year wrestlers, but because of our senior depth, leadership and their love for their teammates, they have made a big impact on getting everyone up to speed.”

Remaining seniors include James Kirchoff (132), Gabe Anderson (152), Tristian Savoye (160), Sam Oosten (195), Gunnar Gronski (195), and DJ Martin (285).

“As a coaching staff we have been very pleased with the improvement we have made from last year,” Coleman said. “Our team’s climate is outstanding. Our seniors and captains are doing a great job with our inexperienced and young team with their encouragement and connecting with their teammates.

“Our first two weeks was spent on focusing on love, which is a sacrificial act for the benefit of others and that has really allowed us to grow and get better.”

The Spartans  will compete in a six-team dual tournament at 4 p.m. Friday at Stanley-Boyd.

“Wrestling is a tough sport and takes time to learn,” Coleman said. “It’s a very unforgiving sport. It requires a price to pay because of the skills needed to compete at a high level. That is why not a lot of guys are willing to take a chance and get on the mat. But our guys have a great growth mindset and are willing to take risks to become a better athlete and compete at a higher level. I am very proud of every one of them.”

Northwestern Invite

The Spartans finished in second place Saturday behind the host Tigers. Pine City finished in third place and Bayfield was fourth.

Superior opened with a 51-21 loss to the Tigers then defeated Pine City 63-18 and Bayfield 72-9.

Joining Flaherty with undefeated records Saturday were L. Stone (160) and Androsky (126). Stone also earned the fast pin award.

“We had a nice tournament,” Coleman said. “What made it so nice was how our guys competed. Northwestern has a very strong team, but our guys felt they could compete with them and that they did.

“What excites me the most is our team’s cohesion. Everyone has value and has a role. I’m so proud of these guys. They’re showing a lot of character.”

SHS vs. Hayward

The Spartans won nine of the 14 matches against Hayward, including pins by Nathan Anderson (170 pounds), Carter (182), and Flaherty (220).

The remaining six wins were by forfeit — L. Stone (152), Brandon McClure (160), Dylan Lowney (285), Wyatt Johnson (106), Tucker Johnson (113), and Devin Lowney (132).

Hayward had five wins, three via pins.

“We had a nice night of wrestling,” Coleman said. “Our guys have been working hard and it’s paying off.”

Anderson’s pin over George Bestman came at 3:11.

“Nathan started things out for us with a big pin,” Coleman said. “It’s great to see him with that pin because he worked hard and has showed great perseverance. He has only one year of experience and to see him put things together like this is exciting.”

Carter’s pin over Saul DeMain came with 10 seconds remaining in the first period.

“Joe’s also in his second year of wrestling,” Coleman said. “It really is fun and exciting to see their hard work pay off.”

Flaherty pinned Carl Mueller in 37 seconds.

Coleman went on to praise the entire team for their efforts on and off the mat.

“We have a great group of young men that have worked hard on their skills and our team cohesion,” Coleman said. “You could really see it on the bench tonight. Everyone cheered each other on and encouraged each other.

“A great example was when Nathan got his pin.  The guys came right off their feet jumping for joy. It is this type of team unity that can carry us through the rough times and makes it fun coaching.”

SHS vs. Barron

The Spartans won five matches against Barron, including pins by Flaherty (220), D. Lowney (285), Austin Mills (126), and C. Stone (145).

  1. Stone also won his match at 160 pounds with a 4-3 decision over Barron’s Chase Peltier.

“We lost, but it was a fun dual to be a part of,” Coleman said., “We enjoyed two hours of aggressive, hard-fought high school wrestling matches. We have a very young team that has been working hard and is very coachable..

“We had to move some guys around to give us a chance to win the dual and they were willing to do that. We have a very close team that understands the concept of love by making sacrifices for the benefit of others.”

Husky Invite

Martin finished in sixth place for Superior at 285 pounds. Martin went 2-2 with all four of his matches ending in pins.

“We had another nice team performance at a very tough tournament,” Coleman said. “Oscar had his best tournament in his career and DJ, in his first varsity outing, also had a great day. He is a very small 285 wrestler but battles with a lot of heart.

“Our varsity had a very good day with everyone winning at least one match and scoring points for the team. I’m really excited for these guys. They are fun to work with and are willing to work hard.  It makes our job as coaches much easier.”

SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartans were 6-8 in duals last season, including 3-6 in the HON. … Coleman’s assistant coaches are Cal Barr, Steve Plunkett, Brandon Olson, Nick Long and Carter Bahr. … Team managers are Katelin Olson and Rianna Fortin.
