Northwestern takes 2 from Cumberland

The Northwestern Tigers softball team remained undefeated in the Heart O’ North Conference at 3-0 with a sweep of the Cumberland Beavers Saturday in Brule.

The Tigers won by scores of 6-5 and 5-4.

Northwestern (6-3 overall) controlled game one and led 6-2 entering the final inning when Cumberland made things interesting with three runs.

Laryssa Vik had three hits for Northwestern and Rose Tokar tripled. Steph Walters led Cumberland with three hits, including two doubles.

Macey Schultz was the winning pitcher for the Tigers and Lauren Green took the loss.

In game two, Cumberland jumped out to a 2-0 lead, and then it was tied at 2-2 and 4-4 before the Tigers manufactured a run in the seventh inning.

Vik singled, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a fielder’s choice for the 5-4 win.

Lindsey Evans was 4-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers and Tori Anderson was 3-for-3.

Schultz picked up the complete-game victory and Peyton Nyhus suffered the loss for Cumberland (7-4, 1-2).

Northwestern is scheduled to host Barron today, Bloomer Thursday and play at Duluth East Friday.
