Tiger football team falls to Grantsburg

The Northwestern High School football team fell to 1-1 Friday night with a 28-21 loss to the Grantsburg Pirates.

The game pitted the Tigers’ punishing ground game against the Pirates’ fast-paced aerial attack.

Northwestern junior Nate Pearson ran for more than 200 yards, but Grantsburg quarterback Tristan Brewer proved to be too much for the Tigers as he threw for two touchdowns and eclipsed 200 yards passing.

The game started on a high note for the Tigers when Grantsburg fumbled on its second play and Dakota Wiese recovered the ball for Northwestern at the Pirates’ 35-yard line. The Tigers then ran the ball to the 24-yard line before a fumble of their own returned possession to the Pirates.

It would be the first of four fumbles for the Tigers, two of which they lost.

Grantsburg also struggled to hold on to the ball in the first quarter. After recovering Northwestern’s first-series fumble, the Pirates moved the ball 73 yards before losing the ball to Northwestern at the 2-yard line.

Northwestern’s second series ended in a punt after a bad snap led to a quarterback sack, and the Pirates scored their first touchdown of the night eight plays later.

The TD came when Grantsburg faked a punt in a fourth-and-14 situation and Brewer connected with Josh Glover on a 42 yard pass. Avery Fagerberg’s extra-point kick gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead with about a minute left in the first quarter.

The Tigers answered quickly as Pearson broke away on the first play of the second quarter and took the ball 63 yards to the end zone. Jordan Orme’s kick tied the score at 7-7.

Another TD pass from Brewer to Glover put Grantsburg back on top, but the teams went into halftime tied when Micah Goetsch finished off a 63-yard drive with a 1-yard run up the middle.

Northwestern gave Grantsburg three first downs on penalties in the first half.

In the third quarter, the teams again traded touchdowns. Tony Britton broke through for the Pirates, and Pearson scored for the Tigers.

Grantsburg then took control of the game in the final quarter when Northwestern lost its second fumble of the night. The Pirates recovered at the Tigers’ 40-yard line and needed just five plays to take a 28-21 lead.

Northwestern had one last chance to even the score but came up short on a fourth-down attempt to give the ball back to Grantsburg. The Pirates then managed the clock and eventually took a knee to seal their 28-21 victory.

The Tigers open Heart O’ North Conference play Friday with a 7 p.m. game at Bloomer.

NOTES: The Tigers played without linemen Logan Moreau and Alex Tecker on Friday. Moreau is sidelined with a knee injury, and Tecker is out after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the season opener.
